Austin water - Drought Survival Tools for Your Yard Pilot Program

I am super stoked about this new city of Austin program. We have been preaching the benefits of aeration and top dressing lawns for years as a water conservation and organic approach to building the soil structure and increasing the water holding capacity of our heavy clay soils in Austin. The city and Austin Water are spending enormous amounts of time on education and program development and now with the rebate for aeration, compost, and mulch, they have just stepped it up to another level.

Austin Water and The City of Austin are offering up to $180 in rebates for composting, mulching and aerating yards in preparation for the long, hot summer to come (like we needed to be reminded!) These important techniques ensure that water will be used efficiently and will reduce the need for supplemental irrigation. The weather's nice most days now, so start planning some advance projects to save water and some money.
Rebates Available
  • Compost – 1.5 cubic yards or 40 cubic feet--rebate $30
  • Mulch – 3 cubic yards or 80 cubic feet--rebate $40
  • Core aeration service for entire front and/or back lawn area (equipment rental is acceptable) --rebate $50
  • The rebate for doing all three --$180 ($60 bonus)

Inflows into the Highland Lakes worst in last 4 years.

Starting off 2014 very poorly in the rainflow, runoff into the lakes department. Will 80-90% rain chances Sunday and Monday, hopefully we can change that trend.

Rainbarrel Purchase Program for Cedar Park, Round Rock Leander, Wells Branch, etc.

Since the City of Austin has stopped their rain barrel program,  this is the closest program. $69 for a 50 gallon barrel. Order by March 30th. Pickup  April 5th. City of Austin water customers should still be eligible for a 50 cents per gallon rebate, so save another $25 per barrel.

TexasET Network Landscape Watering Recommendations - "Cougar Central Austin"

We received a little bit of rain last week and it is warming up today to 82 degrees, looking like Winter is behind us. Based on the rain we received last week, you are probably OK to NOT water this week, so turn your controller OFF. If you still want to water, only water 1/4" this week.  A good programming strategy is to set your controller default runtimes @100% seasonal adjust to to apply 1" of water per week, then you can reduce you seasonal adjust to 20-30% ( .2-.3") for this week. This is using your controller like a thermostat or "accelerator" pedal to regulate watering.  There are some sensors ( Solar Sync, Weatherstations, Soil Moisture sensors, etc. ) that will make these adjustments automatically for you.
